Concepts and main types of land fragmentation / Popov A.S. // Ekonomika APK. - 2015. - № 7 - P. 51

The concept of land fragmentation in the scientific literature is reviewed and analysed. The land fragmentation is seen as a spatial problem concerning the farm size; the number of land parcels belonging to the farm; the size and shape characteristics of land parcels; the size distribution of plots and the spatial distribution of plots. The author provides the description of all existing types of land fragmentation: fragmentation of land ownership; land use; within a farm (or internal fragmentation); and separation of ownership and use. It was determined that not all types of land fragmentation consist an obstacle for efficient agricultural production. The relationship between fragmentation and development of market land relations is analysed. The effect of land fragmentation on the efficiency of agriculture and ways to overcome this problem are discovered. Some advantages and disadvantages of the land fragmentation are presented.
